Stairway to the stars

Hah! With much effort, a heat gun and biodegradable liquid paint stripper - in a record breaking six hours - I've made a good start on stripping the staircase.

Here is the result...


Now the questions are: which bits to re-paint and how to proceed further?

I want to sand the treads, and will try to remove a bit more paint and carpet glue (the dark areas).

Then oil and / or wax, or re-paint the sides? Any opinions?
