Surround
Hurrah - we've found a fireplace surround that fits the bill in the master bedroom. We had opened up the chimney breast ages ago, but could never decide what to do with it.
Then I stumbled across this beauty on eBay (while looking for something completely different... that's how these things go). It turned out to be from a lovely couple in Bedford, who've also been undertaking a massive amount of refurbishment work on their house, and they had this one spare.
You might say it is little more than an 'expensive shelf', as the fireplace is not operational, but no, shhh you sceptic - it really 'rounds off' the room, even making it feel bigger. As if a piece of a puzzle that was missing has now been found and replaced.
