Welcome Liss Bros

We've got a new housemate. Mr Liss.

Liss Bros. Ltd., to be exact.*

I've done another charity shop safari - hunting for prey.

And this lovely cupboard caught my eye.

*Actually, Liss Brothers Limited is about as exact as we can get, because unlike our Kohn chairs, our Jaycee dresser and our Lebus Link sideboard, it is really hard to find out much about this company on the web.

Even emails to the Furniture History Society, the Centre for the Study of the Domestic Interior and the Victoria & Albert Museum have failed to turn up anything.

Can you help us discover more?

Here is what we know, or what we think we know, so far...

Name: Liss Bros. Limited.

Founded: 25 May 1945.

Address: 3 Church Road, Croydon, CR0 1SG.

Dissolved voluntarily: 23rd March 1981.

Liquidator: Chairman, Michael Liss, 49 Becmead Avenue, London, SW16 1UJ.

The London Gazette says the nature of business upon being wound up was ‘Property Investment’, so we wonder if the company had stopped making furniture at an earlier point and changed its focus completely. However, it may be a different firm altogether.

Michael (or another male Liss) had a son, Peter Liss, now an eminent Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, and a CBE and Fellow of the Royal Society.

We know this thanks to a recent post on his wife Ruth's blog, which said the company not only sold items for the home, but was also contracted to make furniture for the Ministry of Defence.

Messages have been left for Peter and Ruth Liss, and also with the Geffrye Museum, but if you can help, then please comment below.
